Principal’s Message

Dear Parent(s),

I hope the week with family celebrating the holiday brought new memories, laughter and love to your hearts.  It surely did for my family; new traditions were created with family and friends and old traditions were celebrated as well.

The Festival of Lights was one of those new traditions my family embarked on this past holiday break.  And of course our first stop before the parade was to celebrate a school tradition: our Springer Bee, Jackson and Bella, his handler were marching in the parade.

Traditions continued as we returned to school.  We welcomed over fifty  families to our Springer Community during our Kinder and New Family Information Night on Thursday.  We had several community members and students involved during the information night.  I am thankful for all of you who took your time to share the Springer Way.     In addition, Colby Bassett in our Run 4 Your Life noon activity became our first marathoner (26.2 mile).  Congratulations.

Reading Corner:        Check out these read-aloud favorites

What You Do With A Problem? Kobi Yamada

This is the story of a persistent problem and the child who isn't so sure what to make of it. The longer the problem is avoided, the bigger it seems to get. But when the child finally musters up the courage to face it, the problem turns out to be something quite different than it appeared.

La Mariposa,  Francisco Jimenez

La Mariposa is one of my favorite books about how learning blossoms.  The butterfly is a metaphor for change.

Dear Springer Families,

Are you ready to "Bee Generous" and make a difference this holiday season? Springer School and our Girl Scout Juniors Troop #61166 are excited to announce that we will be hosting a Family Giving Tree Holiday Wish Drive this year!

Since 1990, the Family Giving Tree has fulfilled gift wishes for over one million San Francisco Bay Area children, families and seniors from low-income households. In 2015 alone, they fulfilled more than 72,000 holiday wishes, 85% of those being children’s wishes. Your participation in our Holiday Wish Drive is an opportunity for you to personally, positively influence the lives of less fortunate people in our community.

Here's how you can help:

Choose a wish card in the Springer office and fulfill a child’s wish. Cards will be hanging on our "Bee Generous Giving Tree", starting Monday, November 28.  All gift donations should be unwrapped with the wish card and a toothbrush securely taped to the package.  Gifts are due in the office by Friday, December 9.

Please contact Diana Rudolph (drudolph@lasdschools.org) or Gail Roosakos (gail@roosakos.com) if you have any questions, or visit www.FamilyGivingTree.org for more information about the program. Thank you for helping us bring hope and joy to those in need!

Hour Of Code

This upcoming week (December 5th-9th) is Computer Science Education Week, a week dedicated to showing students K-12 the importance of computer science

education.  Organized by code.org with the goal to get 10 million students of all ages (and adults) to participate in the hour of code.

According to code.org, "90% of K-12 schools in the U.S. do not teach computer science."  Los Altos School District, thanks to funding from LAEF, is fortunate enough to be in the 10% of U.S. Schools that are offering every student the opportunity to learn computational thinking through the STEM and C-STEM programs.

During this week each student at Springer and LASD will be participating in a computational thinking/coding lesson.  The STEM lab is also open on Tuesday and Thursday at lunch for extra coding time.

If you are looking for a good coding program to use with your kids, here are a few we use at Springer.
