Principal’s Message |
|
Dear Parents, This week’s class tour took me into the world of literature. Students had created book trailers to introduce books to be read during literature circle. They used their research skills introduced by the teacher to create their book trailers. Of course no one put in the ending of the stories. There were no spoilers. As they viewed the book trailers they created, they rated the books to help them select their literature circle reading. Using their skills to summarize, analysis and create were evident. Ask your child(ren) what they did today in reading, math, science, social studies, art, music and PE. Powerschool: If you haven’t logged into PowerSchool please be sure to do so. Here is the information that was sent out earlier this year. Click here. If you have any problems please contact the office. We have been spending time updating PowerSchool so that you are able to monitor mastery towards standards. Next week on November 10th at 8:45 am at the principal coffee, I will have a cart of computers available for you to log into your child’s account. I will talk through the shifts in reporting - what used to be a collection of assignments and tests to a report on standards based progress. You will see a sample report card and there will be plenty of time to ask questions. Reading Corner: We have a Parent Library in our office. You may check out the books with Diana Rudolph for no more than a month. What kinds of books will you find there?
Math Corner: Just a Reminder AMC Math Competition Opportunity The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice competition exam for middle school math students, done without calculators. The competition is run by the Mathematical Association of America who score the test. The MAA AMC office will begin emailing official scores and reports in early to mid-December following the AMC 8 in late November. The email reports go out roughly in the order in which they receive them from schools. Processing and reporting from start to finish takes about 3 to 4 weeks.Here’s a link to a sample question. Mindfulness Corner: Click on Heart Mind activities for the family. My son taught me to slow up and notice my surrounds. He saw a picture of a dragon painted on the wall in Japantown that I had not noticed the past 10 tens… I was too busy… Now I try to be present and enjoy what is happening around me.
Buzzz… Did you know that I love to paddleboard. My first trip on a paddleboard was eight years ago and I haven’t stopped paddling. In fact, my son was nine months old when took his first ride with me. Lynn Boskie, Principal |

Donate books to kids in need As in previous years we will be collecting money to be used to buy books that will be distributed to the children of the Lake County, CA fire. This year, you can also select a book to donate for this purpose. Please discuss your family’s purchasing guidelines before the event to help children make good choices. A hold area will be available daily if you prefer to make purchase decisions together after school. As this is a fundraiser, all sales are final. |

Community Food Drive! |
|
Hello Springer Community! The Springer Student Ambassadors (formerly Student Council) are teaming up with the Community Service Agency (CSA) of Mountain View to fundraise non-perishable food items for families in need this holiday season. We will hold a non-perishable food drive starting on Monday, November 7th and ending on Friday, November 18th. The Springer Student Ambassadors will be collecting the food in front of the Star Wall each morning of the food drive. For every three items donated, students will receive a raffle ticket and be entered into a raffle for some prizes throughout the food drive. Any non-perishable goods are welcomed, but the more nutritious the food for families in need, the better for their holiday meals. Thank you so much for your generosity to our community! Cornerstone Corner |
This month’s ABC book: “Don’t Laugh at Me” by Steve Seskin promotes acceptance and understanding of individual differences.
Goals of lesson: 1. Students learn to express tolerance for others.
and peaceful conflict resolution in order to create a school where every student feels accepted, valued and safe.
We hope you will talk with your child tonight about Don’t Laugh at Me to reinforce the message at home:
1. How do you feel when you are treated unfairly by others? Why? 2. Which injustices in the world bother you most? 3. Why?
When you “catch” kids modeling positive behaviors... Notice, Name it, and Celebrate it!

Tax Donation Receipts |

Tax donation receipts were sent out (via email) for all BTS Form orders that included a tax deductible donation. Contact Donna Murphy (at jcdrm[at]yahoo[dot]com) with any questions regarding your BTS order or donation amount. If you didn’t get a chance to fill out the online BTS Form, hard copy forms are available in the PTA Membership cubby in the office. Thank you for your support of the Springer PTA! |

Walk-a-thon Donations Due Tuesday, Nov. 8 |
|
Don't forget, Tuesday, November 8 is the deadline to turn in your pledge money and green sponsor card in order to be included in the class participation contest. Please attach payment to the sponsor card(s) and place it in the Walk-a-thon cubby in the office. Checks should be made out to the Springer PTA. Please combine payments for multiple students into one check per family, per donor. Be sure to thank all your sponsors and thank you for participating in our Walk-a-thon. The Walk-a-thon committee is looking for parents to join the committee for next year!
