Principal’s Message

SBAC Testing starts next week!

Next week will be the start of Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium testing- known as SBAC testing.  All 3rd-6th graders will take an online tests in the areas of Language Arts and Mathematics. All testing will be completed by May 13th. Teachers have worked hard on the testing schedule in order to ensure that tests are taken early in the day (when minds are the sharpest).  This will be the 3rd year in a row we’ve taken these state mandated tests (the first year was a “practice” year).  Results from last year’s test were good and we’re feeling confident that Springer students will do well again.

Not everyone is a fan of state mandated testing but they do provide us with some good data.  Test results help us measure whether we are teaching to the Common Core standards and determine whether we need to adjust our instruction.  We stress with the students that, while we want them to do their best, the SBAC results are just one measurement of their learning.  We really try to keep the anxiety level down with the students.   Some of our students actually like the testing process!

You can assist us greatly in the testing process by:

•Making sure your child has plenty of sleep and a healthy breakfast each day

•Getting your student to school on time each day

•Avoid scheduling appointments for the next two weeks or putting those appointments in the late afternoon)

•Reminding your child that the SBAC is not a “make or break it” test- it’s simply one measurement of their learning

Thank you for your continued support of Springer!

Wade Spenader- Principal

Monday, May 2, 1:00pm
Grades 3 - 6

Pulitzer-Prize winning American author and columnist Dave Barry will be visiting with our 3-6 grade students on Monday, May 2.  Dave is one of the funniest authors around.  He has written more than two dozen books including the tremendously popular "Peter and the Starcatchers" series and "Science Fair", which he co-authored with Ridley Pearson.  Dave's latest series is the New York Times bestselling "The Worst" series.  The first book of this series is "The Worst Class Trip Ever".  Dave will be talking our students about this latest book, "The Worst Night Ever".

Order forms for an autographed copy of Dave's latest books can be found here.  Please return your book order and check made out to Kepler's by Monday, April 25.  Completed order forms can be turned into your child's teacher or into the Library cubby in the office.

While we understand that many parents would like to see Dave Barry in person, we are discouraging parental attendance due to the limited space in the multi.

A heartfelt thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to help set-up and take down the Springer Student Art Show at Open House.  Thank you Elodie LaPlace, Janine Jelich, Katie Cowley, Janet Luo, Kimiyo Straw, Christina Keech, Pamela Davies, Kristen Gklaros-Stavropoulos, Kelly Berger, Anita Leo, Kara Jariwala and Anna Dimant.  An extra special thank you to Kathy Stiles who volunteered in and out of my classroom all week sorting, labeling and matting artwork, took the lead in coordinating volunteers and managed the take down in my absence while I was working at another school.   I truly appreciate your help and your commitment to making the art show a wonderful display of our students' artistry.  Bravo, Springer!
