Principal’s Message |
Honoring Volunteerism at Springer on May 28th
I was giving a tour to a prospective family the other day and I was asked the question about parent involvement at Springer. Do parents get involved here? My answer was an enthusiastic yes and I think I surprised the parent when I rattled off all of the things that parents, and others, do at Springer when they volunteer their time.
So many of you volunteer, in so many ways, that it’s impossible to encapsulate all the important work volunteers do across Springer in this small space. But, a couple of key points need to be made here. First, the parent volunteer component of our programs are key in giving our kids the very best experience possible. One example is the library program at Springer. Thanks to our dedicated library parent volunteers, a trip to the library for our students is made more efficient and richer. Secondly, and equally important, is the message our volunteers send to our students by simply being here and donating their time. Our students see that volunteers care, that everyone has an important role, and that education is a shared effort where adults play an integral part.
Our staff is so appreciative of any and all volunteer efforts. One small way we’d like to show you our appreciation is by asking you to attend our annual Volunteer Breakfast on May 28th (look for the invite in your child’s Friday Folder, put in there lovingly by a parent volunteer). We wish to honor you with a light breakfast in the multi at 8:15am followed by a school wide assembly at 8:45am.
Thank you for all you do! Wade Spenader- Principal |

LAEF |
LAEF: $90,548 and three weeks to go With just three weeks left of school, LAEF needs your support to help us fulfill our promise and grant to LASD for 2014-15. We have received quite a few donations and corporate matches in the past two weeks, but still are $90,548 short to fully fund your child's enrichment this year. Please donate today or request a match from your company to pay for the programs your child has enjoyed THIS current year, including STEM, PE, art, library, music and smaller class sizes in K-3. We strive for 100% participation from our families, and it’s not too late to give. Please donate at laefonline.net or drop a check in our school’s office this week. Thank you. Funvisors--Springer Scribes |
Springer Scribes Literary Journal is coming soon About 100 kids have participated in the lunchtime Funvisors Springer Scribes program this year. They have met once a month at lunch to write poems and short stories, and now it is time for them to share their writing with the world. Each child who participated had the opportunity to pick their favorite work to include in a Literary Journal that is being published next week. With illness, field trips, and other lunchtime activities, not all children have had a chance to select something to include. If your child would like to have their work included, please send an email to SpringerScribes@gmail.com. |
Project Cornerstone |
Cornerstone Corner This month’s ABC book: “Thank You, Mr. Falker” by Patricia Polacco is an autobiographical book about a struggling student. At age 5 she goes to school to learn to read. By fifth grade, she still can’t read and continues to be bullied by other students. She is a wonderful artist and is encouraged and supported by her family. Finally, when she gets to fifth grade her teacher, Mr. Falker, works with her to discover her unique keys to learning. This is a story about a family’s love, a girl’s pain and what happens when an adult believes in a child’s potential to learn. Goals of lesson: · Celebrate student’s heroes. · Recognize teachers as UPstanders and their efforts to create a caring school climate. · Identify personal strengths to help overcome difficulties. · Build empathy for students with learning challenges. · Generate ways to be UPstanders when faced with cyberbullying. *Youth are more likely to grow up healthy when they perceive that adults in the community value youth. Here are some ways to build this asset: · Spend time with young people. (Not just your own child, but all young people.) · Listen and take seriously what they have to say. · Seek out young people and solicit their feedback. · Let them know their presence and participation are appreciated. Questions to ask your child: · Overall, do you feel our community values children and young people? Why or why not? · How do people in the community show they love and appreciate you? · Which adults help you feel empowered and valuable? Why? When you “catch” kids OR adults modeling positive behaviors... Notice, Name it, and Celebrate it! |
