Principal’s Message

What you didn’t see at Open House last night…

Junior Olympics training- 4th, 5th and 6th graders, before school, at lunch, and times in between practicing their events.  There were a bevy of parent coaches out there with them, preparing them for the Junior Olympics on April 30th.

5th graders rehearsing the Revolution musical- Under the direction of Mrs. Van Dyken, The class was in full swing, getting ready for their production of a wonderful musical that depicts the monumental decisions and actions of the American Revolution.

High participation rate by our students in the recycling/composting program at lunch.  Green isn’t only our school color!  At Springer, we take care of the earth that our kids will soon inherit.  The students are active composters, recyclers and trash-reducers.  They are also savvy water conservers.

Transitional Kindergartners working collaboratively together- and celebrating it! I was witness to students solving puzzles together and bragging about how they used teamwork to achieve their goals.

Teacher Kelly, our enthusiastic Dance teacher from Starting Arts, teaching our Kinder-3rd graders dance steps from various genres.  The students love Teacher Kelly whenever she sets foot on campus.

Caring students, supporting each other on the playground, working out their differences using the tools taught to them through our Project Cornerstone program.

Fabulous work done by staff on Wednesday’s staff meeting on giving feedback for the Essential standards we will be reporting on next year.  As I like to tell the teachers, the genius is not in the room, it is the room!

We’ve all been doing great work to get up to this point in the year.  There is still more learning and fun in store when we get back from break, but we do it regularly on an everyday basis- so we’ll be ready to roll when we get back.

Thank you for all your support and for being a one-of-a-kind community!

Enjoy the well-deserved break.

Wade Spenader- Principal

Project Cornerstone

Cornerstone Corner

This month’s ABC book: “One” by Kathryn Otoshi is a colorful story of acceptance and tolerance and tells the tale of how just one voice can make a difference.

Goals of lesson:

1. Students know, accept and value who they are.

2. Students believe that they have the power to make a difference in their own (and other students’) lives.

3. Students recognize that they have power within themselves to react/respond in bullying/bucket dipping situations.

Help reinforce the positive messages at home:

*Ask your child in what areas of their life do they feel they have the most control? The least control? Why?

*Talk about ways that each family member counts!

*Practice with your child ways to de-escalate emotionally charged conversations using a calm tone of voice, positive words, and comforting body language.

*Remind your child that you think they are ONE great kid!

When you “catch” kids using positive behaviors... Notice it, Name it, and Celebrate it!

Three things to know about LASD STEM:

Launched three years ago with funding from LAEF, the LASD STEM program is now recognized nationally for its exciting, well-integrated student-centered projects.

  • Every elementary school has a STEM teacher and a STEM lab where students in all grades actively engage in solving problems through hands-on experiences.

  • New this year, every elementary school now has a MakerSpace, equipped with tools and supplies for students to create, invent and learn with their friends during lunchtime.

  • STEM improvements also include updated robotics and engineering, new equipment such as a 3D printer at every elementary school, and integration of science and computer science into grade level curriculum.

Your donations to LAEF have helped to fund our outstanding team of STEM teachers and district STEM coach this school year. To learn more or to support this program by making a donation, please go to LAEFonline.org.
