Principal’s Message

Welcome to 2016!  I hope you and your family had a fantastic break and are enjoying the great start to 2016.   Did you make any New Year’s resolutions?  Resolutions are good because they can lead to new and healthy change.  Sometimes resolutions aren’t new behaviors or habits; sometimes they are just re-commitments to principles to which we already adhere.    In the spirit of re-commitment (and fun), here are some good resolutions to which we all could adhere:

I resolve to use my growth mindset- to know that I can get better at anything with hard work and effort over time.

I resolve to be more present in the moment- to be more mindful of my surroundings and grateful for those around me.

I resolve to drive more safely, especially around Springer’s campus.  On that note, I resolve not to leave my car when parked along the drop-off curb!

I resolve to model the behavior I want to see in those around me.

I resolve to read the Buzz every week!

Again, these are not new resolutions but re-commitments to the things we value.

Hoping you have a wonderful weekend!

Wade Spenader- Principal

“Beyond Measure” Film Screening

Gardner Bullis will host a screening of the film “Beyond Measure” - the follow up to film “Race to Nowhere”

The screening will take place Thursday, January 14th at Foothill College in the Smithwick Theatre.  Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the movie will start promptly at 7:00 pm. There will be a brief Q and A after the screening for about 30 minutes. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through our Eventbrite site here:

To see the film’s trailer, please click here.

About the film:

“‘Beyond Measure” shines a light on tenacious and cutting-edge alternatives to the stifling, high-pressure education system presented in its predecessor.  Where many past documentaries have dwelled on the education crisis and the policies to blame for it, “Beyond Measure” follows public schools across the country as they take matters into their own hands, innovating from the inside. By spotlighting success stories, “Beyond Measure” shows that it is possible to rise above America’s toxic achievement fixation and build a richer, deeper, more empowering, and student-centered education culture from the ground up.”

Raise Funds For Springer With OhmConnect

The Springer community started using a novel fundraising platform last year, called OhmConnect. We raised $930 by having a handful of parents of the school turn down their electricity usage just one hour per week.

We're aiming to raise $5,000 this year and all you need to do is signup using this link and connect your utility account.

Project Cornerstone

This month’s ABC book: “Mr. Peabody’s Apples” by Madonna is inspired by a 300 year old Ukrainian tale. The story is about a respected man who is a role model in his community. Once a rumor starts, he is quickly ostracized and excluded by both adults and children in his small town. The story cautions students to choose their words wisely so as not cause harm to others.

Goals of lesson:

  • Identify qualities of good role models.

  • Understand that each student can be a role model.

  • Role model responsible ways to behave while online and in the real

  • world.

  • Demonstrate that everyone has the power to stop a rumor.

To reinforce this lesson at home:

* Remember that you are a role model in your home and community.  Children watch everything you do and say.

* Remind your child the strategies discussed in class:

* Refuse to listen when friends are gossiping.

* Don’t repeat rumors or gossip to others.

* Question the accuracy of the rumor.

* Say something positive about the target of the rumor.

Today, rumors and gossip are often spread beyond the bathroom walls and into the digital world, which makes it possible for rumors to spread even further and even more quickly. To learn how to help your kids navigate this online world, visit the website of Common Sense Media at www.commonsensemedia.org

Living Classroom

Become a LIVING CLASSROOM docent... share your love of nature with kids!
