Principal’s Message

Walk on the Wild Side Tomorrow

Springer’s annual Walk-a-thon is tomorrow and the theme this year is Walk on the Wild Side.  This jungle inspired theme promises some creative and colorful decorations on the course.  A DJ, food trucks, and lots of other activities will provide additional fun for this community event.

I love the Walk-a-thon for all kinds of reasons.  It’s the one Saturday a year where all of us come together to support a cause we know is important.  The children’s excitement and enthusiasm is tremendous.  And, I am always amazed at the corps of volunteers that work tirelessly (well, I’m sure they get tired) to make this event possible.  Thank you, all of you, who will participate in some way tomorrow.  It’s a highlight of the year.

Coffee with the Principal:  The next Coffee with the Principal will be on Friday, October 16th at 8:45am in the staff lounge.  I will be giving an update on our shift to Standards Based Grading and our work with Haiku.  There will also be some time for casual Q and A.  I’d love to see you there.

Have a great weekend.  I’ll see you tomorrow.

Wade Spenader- Principal

Noon Duty Position Open

Do you want to get involved at Springer in a super fun and positive way?  Do you like to play?  If so, you might be interested in the noon duty position opening we have currently.   The position requires you to supervise, interact, and engage yourself with the students of Springer at lunchtime.  It’s only an hour a day (11:45am-12:45pm) and it is a paid position!  If you, or anyone you know, is interested please contact Principal Wade Spenader.    wspenader@lasdschools.org

Come to the Walk-a-thon TOMORROW!

The Springer Walk on the Wild Side Walk-a-thon is tomorrow -- Saturday, October 10! Registration starts at 9:15; walk from 10-3. If you forgot to turn in your green form, you can do so at the event! Guest walkers can register on-site.

Many families set up pop-up sun shades and establish a 'home base' for their kids. Please also bring:

  • Sun protection (hat, sunscreen)

  • Comfortable shoes (extra sock and maybe a spare pair of shoes -- the field might be wet with morning dew)

  • Water and healthy snacks

  • Quarters and small bills (kids can buy treats with quarters from "Pocket People" on the course)

  • A picnic blanket, chair and sun umbrellas

We still need afternoon volunteers! Please come by the Volunteer Table at the Walk-a-thon if you can help.

LAEF

$1,000,000 in donations & counting

Our board of 29 parent volunteers would like to thank the families - 767 so far - who have already made their annual donation to LAEF. We just reached the $1M mark on our way to funding our 2015-16 grant, which benefits every child, in every grade, in every school in LASD. Please show your spirit by placing your LAEF Window Cling in your car today and inspire others to join you.

If you haven’t had a chance to give, give today at LAEFonline.org and save us a call! Our annual phonathon is the week of October 19th and our parent volunteers will be calling families who have not yet given, to help us reach our goal of $3.5M. The best news is that all NEW gifts and any dollar you give OVER your contribution amount last year will be matched by LAEF’s Board of Directors, up to $100,000.  Thank you!

Springer's LAEF representatives will be on campus on Thursday, October 15th, during morning drop-off.  Stop by to say hello and ask questions about this year's grant.  You can also drop off your donation!

Project Cornerstone

Cornerstone Corner

This month’s ABC book: “Simon’s Hook” by Karen Burnett is a colorful story that compares teases to fishing hooks and tells the tale of how the fish learned not to bite.

Goals of lesson:

*Help students feel empowered and in control of their responses to hurtful teases and put-downs.

*Have students learn and practice specific language and techniques to allow them to swim free.

*Simon’s neighbor, Grandma Rose gives him some advice on how to “Swim Free” from insults and teasing:

  • Do little or nothing—don’t react!

  • Pretend to agree with the hook.

  • Change the subject to distract the bully.

  • Laugh at the hook and make a joke of it.

  • Stay away from the hooks and swim in another part of the sea.

As caring adults in the lives of youth, we can help develop and nurture skills to navigate the rough patches in life. Our ultimate goal is for youth to be able to handle these bumps and ruts on their own!   This month’s Springer Challenge is to practice using  the “Swim Free” strategies when faced with bucket dipping.

When you “catch” kids modeling positive behaviors...Notice, Name it, and Celebrate it!

OhmConnect Earns $$ For Springer!

The Springer community started using a novel fundraising platform last year, called OhmConnect. We raised $930 by having a handful of Springer parents turn down their electricity usage just one hour per week.

We're aiming to raise $5,000 this year and all you need to do is signup using this link and connect your utility account.

ohmc.co/bcrane09

OhmConnect donates between $50 - $150 per team member per year, depending on how much you reduce. As part of a "Back to School" competition running through 9/24, they'll be donating an instant $30 per new team member. If you haven't signed up yet, now's the time to do it!
