NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

LAEF update

For more than 30 years, LAEF has helped bring enrichment programs to LASD students.  Staff for Physical Education, Music, Art, and reduced student-to-teacher ratios are all supported by your donations.   In addition, this year's innovation grant includes funding for a new STEM lab and full-time teacher at every elementary school in the district.  Combined with PTA funding for the supplies and equipment that help deliver these programs and others, your contributions to both are critical.

Please click here to pledge and/or donate now.

Would you like to be more involved?  LAEF needs ambassadors from each school to spread the good news in your school community.  For information,  contact one of the representatives listed below.

Please join us.  It's our largest fundraising year yet and we need your help!

Get ready for the Walk-a-thon!

Are you ready to go "Coast to Coast" with the Springer Walk-a-thon? The big event is coming up on Saturday, October 12 from 10 am to 3 pm. Keep watching your Friday folders for all the exciting details coming soon.

Meanwhile, please make sure to submit your child's t-shirt size via the online Back-to-School form! You can also pre-order food and extra Walk-a-thon shirts there. Check it out for easy one-stop shopping!

Finally, we need volunteers! It only takes a moment to sign up online for lots of fun, easy one-hour day-of Walk-a-thon jobs. Just click here

Questions?  Contact Karen McKinley karenhey@stanfordalumni.org or Christy Gammons  christine.gammons@gmail.com

The Springer Back To School (BTS) Order Form is a quick, easy, on-line tool that allows you to make donations, sign up for PTA memberships, order Birthday Books, select your child(ren)'s Walk-a-thon T-shirt size, and purchase 6th Grade T-shirts, Walk-a-thon Food Pre-Orders, Auction Tickets, Spirit Wear, and more.  This is a convenient way to make a single payment for your donations and orders!  Click on the link below to open the form.  We recommend reviewing the 2013-2014 Spirit Wear selection with your child(ren) before opening the form.

New this year: We've added the option to pay by e-check.  Please consider registering with Intuit so that you can make payments to Springer (and LAEF and the MVLA high school foundation) using an e-check.  Intuit charges the PTA a flat fee of 50 cents per pay payment.  PayPal, on the other hand, charges the PTA ~3.5% of your payment.  Please help us greatly reduce our banking/processing fees by choosing to pay by e-check rather than PayPal.  Making your payment by check is of course still an option, but e-check payments are preferred as it is the fastest/easiest way for us to process the payments and meet our ordering deadlines.

The link to the form is: Springer 2013 BTS Order Form

The password is "stingers" (all lower case)

The online form will close on Sunday, September 15 and payments are due by Friday, September 20.

Thank you for your support of the Springer PTA!

Remember to Register Your WOW Tag

The WOW program for 2013-2014 has started!  To assure that your child’s trips are counted, make sure they “beep in” with their tag at the WOW zapper pole near the lunch tables each day that they Walk or Wheel.

If your child received a new yellow tag last week, remember to register your child’s tag at www.boltage.org.  This step assures that your child’s trips are attributed to your child’s tag.  Otherwise his/her trips cannot be properly accounted for.

If you registered in previous years, you do not need to re-register

If you are not sure if your child is registered, log into www.boltage.org to check.  We have many tags out there, but not all of them are registered.  You can also email anyone on the WOW team, and we can check for you.

If you would like to sign up for a WOW tag or have any questions about the program, please contact the WOW team: Kevin Beedon ksbeedon[at]gmail.com, Kacey Fitzpatrick kfitz[at]avalon-enterprises.com and Sharon Tan sharontantan[at]yahoo.com.

Girls on the Run at Springer is looking for Coaches!

This wonderful program has been at Springer for 8 years, for 3-6th grade girls. No running experience necessary, just a love of working with girls and promoting a positive self image.

The program starts the first week in March and goes through the 3rd week in May. GOTR meets twice a week right after school.

If you are interested in coaching, please contact Diana Rudolph gdrudolph@comcast.net www.gotrsv.org

Become a LIVING CLASSROOM docent... share your love of nature with kids!

The Living Classroom inspires children to learn and value our natural world through docent led hands-on garden-based education.  Please click here to find out more about our upcoming informational meetings on August 29 & 30 and docent trainings, starting on September 9.

LEGO CLUB

Springer's noontime LEGO Club kicks off its third year on Wednesday September 18! Our first theme of 2013/2014 is American amusement parks and attractions in honor of the Springer Walkathon. Students will be encouraged to design their favorite attractions for display during the week of the Walkathon. We have created a LEGO model of Disneyland for students to guess how many LEGO were used for our first Estimation Contest of the year. Winners will be announced at Assembly and LEGO prizes awarded to the top estimators. This year we will be offering a new program to support any student who wishes to come to LEGO Club to help our newer builders. They will join our "LEGO Worker Bees" team and have a special badge to identify them as student volunteers.

Springer is the only school in the district with an extensive collection of over 200 pounds of LEGO and an active noontime LEGO program run by volunteers. LEGO Club is a free Funvisor club open to any student and boasts just as many girls participating as boys.  Students are able to do multi-week builds because our collection is so large. We gladly accept donations and welcome volunteers.

Lego Club is held on Wednesdays at lunch recess in the Multi.

Questions?  Please contact Laurie Pasmooij, Kimiyo Straw, Anita Leo, or Jenni Tellefsen.

Reading in Preterm and Full Term Children

Do you have a six year old? Are you interested in how reading develops?  Here at Stanford, we are conducting a longitudinal research study which uses psychological testing and new brain imaging technology to see how reading skills develop in preterm and full-term children.
