Principal’s Letter

Springer goes up in API!

Last week, Academic Performance Index (API) scores were made public by the Department of Education.  A school's API score is derived from results of STAR testing done in May.  It gives me great pride to announce that Springer's API for 2012 is now a 961 (out of a possible 1000). The district as a whole also did well, with a District API score of 968.

Perhaps most pleasing is the fact that Springer's API score went up 15 points from 2011.  This was the highest increase of any LASD school.  While staff and I will analyze the results a bit further to determine the areas in which we improved, we can be assured that our students' hard work is certainly a cause of the increase.  I also commend our staff's dedication and efforts as factors in the improvement.

The API is an important score because it tells us that not only are we teaching the Standards, but we are doing so effectively.  It shows that our best practices are solidly in place and that our students are learning.  But, please remember that API is just one measure of our school.  It doesn't measure everything we do at Springer.  Nonetheless, I think it's appropriate to pause and give ourselves (students, teachers, and parents alike) a collective pat on the back.

It’s that time of year yet again. The leaves are falling, children are preparing their Halloween costumes, and the stores are stocking their shelves for Christmas.

That’s right! IT’S TIME TO SIGN-UP FOR SOFTBALL! Registration for the Spring 2013 season of MVLA Girls Softball opens November 1. Sign up by November 8th and save!

Established in 1972, MVLA Girls Softball (MVLAGS) is an ASA-sanctioned recreational league committed to giving girls ages 5 to 14 the opportunity to explore and enjoy the game of softball. MVLAGS is a volunteer-driven organization serving over 500 families from over 40 schools in Mountain View, Los Altos, and surrounding communities.

We play on fields throughout the area, including Springer Elementary School, Oak Elementary School, Graham Middle School, and our softball complex at Stevenson Park. Our 6U and 8U divisions are school-based so girls can practice and play with their friends. Upper divisions, 10U and above, are formed in order to balance teams for fair competition. We focus on skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship and, of course, having FUN!  Everyone Plays!
