Principal’s Letter

The Good News:  There’s a Buzz About Campus!

It’s been three weeks since school began.  Like a good field reporter, I asked a number of students and faculty what has been their favorite part of school, so far.  Here are some highlights:

"It's been going very well.  Class, music, any of that stuff."  2nd grader
"I feel very good because I have homework and music.  And we get a popsicle party on Friday." 2nd grader
"I usually like new things in science.  I really enjoy science- it's my favorite subject." 5th grader
"There's not too much homework, but enough to learn the subjects." 5th grader
"I have friends and they are nice to me."  1st grader
"Learning the math.  Thank you for asking me." 2nd grader
"Everyone is friendly." Geb Fassaha, our new custodian
"The freedom that 6th graders get" Obviously a 6th grader!
"Well, I'm really enjoying cursive.  And it's been fun using highlighters, which we do a lot in 3rd grade."
"The best thing so far is that I've made a lot of friends." New 5th grade student
"Well-behaved and enthusiastic students." Ms. Hultberg
"If everything was easy, there would be nothing to learn." 6th grader

So true.

The Not-so-good News:  There’s a Buzz in the Parking Lot.

It seems every year I need to address the community about the safety of our parking lot during drop-off and pick-up.  Please adhere to the following safety precautions.
• Drivers: be alert in the crosswalk zones.  Pedestrians: be sure you are visible and that the cars have stopped before you cross.
SLOW DOWN.  There is absolutely NO reason to drive above 5 mph in the parking lot.
• Do not leave your car while dropping off along the curb. Stay in your car, pay attention, and move forward along the curb when possible.
• Texting while driving is illegal and dangerous.  Yet, we have numerous reports of parents doing so in the parking lot.
• Do not park in the auction winners parking spots unless you are the actual auction winner.

I think it's significant to note that I am being alerted by parents about unsafe actions in the parking lot by our adult drivers.  So, you are being watched.  But, more importantly, we are all being watched by our children who learn from our examples.
Please be more safety conscious during drop-off and pick-up!

WOW
Springer Stingers: Welcome back to school and the new Walk or Wheel (WOW) program!
The WoW program will be kicking off the 2012/13 school year next week!  Please stop by the office or the “kick-off” tables next Monday - Wednesday from 8.15-8.30 near the front entrance!
This year, we will have new incentives, fun competitions between classes, recognition from top riders, bicycle assemblies, a bike rodeo for the 3rd and 4th graders, and much, much more!
Plus, we will have visits from the Mountain View and Los Altos bicycle police!
Please encourage your kids to walk or wheel to school.  Together we will have fun, reduce congestion and pollution, increase road safety, and create healthier lifestyles for our kids.
Please have your kids pick up a WoW tag (or use their tag from last year) so that they can track their efforts through the year and get “Zapped” each morning in the new Springer Stinger WoW ZapZone.
If you have any questions on this year’s WoW program, please feel free to contact the WoW Co-Captains: Kevin Beedon ksbeedon[at]gmail.com and Kacey Fitzpatrick kfitz@avalon-enterprises.com
