Principal’s Letter

Welcome Back!

It's going to be a great year!
The start of every school year is one of the most eagerly anticipated events on my calendar.  The excitement and sense of renewal has never grown routine for me- even after 18 years in education.   Everyone – teachers, students, parents (especially parents!) - is counting down the days to the first day of school.

As we begin the 2012-13 school year, I can honestly say that I have never been as excited to kick off a year as this one.  As a staff, we are charged and ready to go.  The buzz of our teachers, as they look at shifting the curriculum to match 21st century learning, is really inspiring.  All of our teachers, from our newest staff members to our veteran teachers, are entering the year in a reflective mindset that will lead to improved (or upgraded) instruction and so to better, more meaningful learning for our students.  We are poised to move Springer to the District's vision of revolutionizing learning for all students.   It really is energizing!

On behalf of the Springer staff, I want to welcome everyone back to school.  We are so thrilled to be working with your children, and you, this year.

A departure and a new face
It is with a bit of sadness that I announce that Springer's long time custodian, Mr. Manny Casino, is now the day custodian at Santa Rita.  Manny had been at Springer for 20 years!  He was a friendly, familiar face with so many people in our community and he will be missed.  I'm sure he will be equally loved at Santa Rita.

What happened?  Nothing bad.  In a 5 school swap, the district, for many reasons, decided to move some of our day custodians.  Change can be hard, but it also can bring with it a sense of newness and growth.  While we will miss Manny, we are thrilled to have Mr. Geb Fessaha as our new custodian.  Geb has been in LASD a long time.  He's been the custodian at both Loyola and Gardner during his time in the District.  He is hard-working and friendly.  And, in just the short week he has been with us, he has made a positive impact on our site.  I hope you get a chance to introduce yourself and welcome him to our great community.

Safety Reminder
Now that school is back in session, please make a concerted effort to be extra cautious while dropping off and picking up your students.  This reminder is especially important at the beginning of a school year as parents and students establish their routes to and from school.  As always, parking lot safety is a big concern and demands your full attention.  It is up to all of us to create a safe environment for our community.  For the safety of all, please follow these guidelines:
• If dropping off your child by car, drop off only on the curb.  Do not leave your car unattended as it blocks the flow of traffic in the parking lot.
• Slow down and pay attention to the crossing guards.
• Do not park or stop along curbs painted red.  Your car blocks the vision of pedestrians who are crossing streets.
• Please park only in the designated parking spots while in the parking lot.
• Bad weather means more people driving to school.  Give yourself extra time on those days.

Again, safety is everyone's responsibility.  We are counting on you to keep the streets and parking lot safe.

Good article on encouraging life-long reading
If you haven't found the Common Sense Media website yet, I encourage you to visit it.  (Not only does it have valuable information for parents on TV, movie, video game reviews and internet safety, it also posts some good articles for parents about learning in general.  Here is an article on encouraging a life-long love of reading in your children.  Throughout the year, I will continue to share relevant and useful articles for parents.

Follow me on Twitter!
As a way of sharing the great behind-the-scenes things we do at Springer, I am now tweeting!  You can follow me at Twitter@SpringerSpenade.  As always, the Springer Star, our weekly newsletter, will be the main source of timely information, but my tweets will alert you to the day-to-day good stuff we do that often goes unnoticed.
