Principal’s Message |
Dear Springer Families, May Flowers are here and last weekend the Junior Olympics was a buzz with fun and good spirited competition. All of our 4th, 5th and 6th Graders gave their personal best in the various events. It was wonderful to see the students enjoying themselves and cheering on their classmates. On Wednesday evening I went up to visit the 6th Graders at Walden West and they were all beaming and happy. As I walked around, I saw deer in the lower meadow, and a clear sky above; the early evening began to settle in. It was a beautiful night for the 6th Graders to take their night hike. Have a wonderful weekend, Lynn |

Reading Corner |
Reading Corner: Diverse Books
We hope that all children will be able to see themselves in the pages of a book. Books can also help us gain insight into the world beyond. Dr. Rudine Simms Bishop uses the terms “mirrors” and “windows” to describe these different functions; mirror books reflect the reader’s life and experience, while window books offer views into other worlds, whether real or imagined. Books that feature diverse characters can help all children find their reflections and also learn about the diversity of our world. It can be difficult to find books that represent a truly diverse array of characters, but authors and organizations are working to change this. Many websites now feature recommendations for diverse books. Common Sense Media has lists of books with characters of color andbooks that promote tolerance and diversity. Lee and Low, the nation’s largest multicultural children’s book publisher, recommends top diverse book choices by grade level, and you can also find Amazon’s best-selling multicultural children’s books. Perhaps you and your child will discover a new book together that can serve as a mirror and/or a window. Happy reading! |
Cornerstone Corner |
This month’s ABC book: “Thank You, Mr. Falker” by Patricia Polacco is an autobiographical book about a struggling student. At age 5 she goes to school to learn to read. By fifth grade, she still can’t read and continues to be bullied by other students. She is a wonderful artist and is encouraged and supported by her family. Finally, when she gets to fifth grade her teacher, Mr. Falker, works with her to discover her unique keys to learning. This is a story about a family’s love, a girl’s pain and what happens when an adult believes in a child’s potential to learn. Goals of lesson: · Celebrate student’s heroes. · Recognize teachers as UPstanders and their efforts to create a caring school climate. · Identify personal strengths to help overcome difficulties. · Build empathy for students with learning challenges. · Generate ways to be UPstanders when faced with cyberbullying. Youth are more likely to grow up healthy when they perceive that adults in the community value youth. Here are some ways to build this asset: Ø · Spend time with young people. (Not just your own child, but all young people.) · Listen and take seriously what they have to say. · Seek out young people and solicit their feedback. · Let them know their presence and participation are appreciated. Questions to ask your child: · Overall, do you feel our community values children and young people? Why or why not? · How do people in the community show they love and appreciate you? · Which adults help you feel empowered and valuable? Why? When you “catch” kids OR adults modeling positive behaviors... Notice, Name it, and Celebrate it! |
