Principal’s Message

Dear Springer Community,

We kicked off the week with our ambassadors in front of the school gathering donations for We Walk for Water, community service event.  Thank all of you who have support this cause thus far.  This morning I and other students and staff members wore a t-shirt .  Please continue to support this great cause and come walk with us on April 27th at lunchtime.

Today we had a morning PTA meeting and Bhavna Narula, the principal from Blach come for a  Q & A.  Her main message was that Blach provides a safe environment for all students with a variety of options for students to choose from.  One parent said, “ with some many great options it is really hard for my child to select their electives.”

CAASPP Testing official begins on April 20 - May 10th. If possible during could you please try to schedule appointment around these times, we would appreciate it. Please check your child’s teacher’s regular communication for their detailed testing schedule.

Have wonderful weekend,

Lynn

Read-A-Thon

Hello Springer Families!

Saturday kicks off the second annual Springer Read-A-Thon!  The purpose of this challenge is to encourage the love of reading among the students. How it will work -- A reading log will be sent home with your student(s) in Friday folders on 4/20. Each day, please log the number of minutes your student(s) read and then initial, filling in the total number of minutes read at the end.  Please be sure an adult signs the grand total of minutes at the end of the week.  Include any “Caught Reading” slips that students have earned attached to the reading log.  Reading logs should be returned to school by Tuesday, May 1st.  At the end of the challenge the class in each grade level (on average) with the most amount of reading minutes will win a popsicle party.

If needed, you can get a replacement reading log here.

If you have any questions, please email the committee at: springerreadathon@gmail.com

Reading Corner

Reading Corner: Enjoy the Read-a-Thon!

We hope your child enjoys participating in the Read-a-Thon next week! This is a great opportunity to do some extra reading. Research tells us that kids need to read a lot to develop their reading skills, and that lots of time spent reading is closely linked to reading achievement. Just as practice helps us learn to play an instrument or speak another language, quality practice is critical to growth in reading. Students spend time reading at school, but it’s always helpful to read at home as well. Reading for just 30 minutes per day results in a reader seeing millions of words per year. That’s valuable practice that really makes a difference.

The Read-a-Thon could be a chance to try new types of books. Maybe your child can check out a new series, explore a new nonfiction topic, enjoy some poetry (during April’s National Poetry Month), or even reread an old favorite with a new perspective. Happy Read-a-Thon!

Assessment Corner

CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance Progress)

This is a statewide test SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) that is given each year across the state of California to all 3rd-6th grade students.

The test is completed online and untimed. Students will be assessed in English Language Arts and Mathematics.  An additional test in Science will be given to all fifth grade students.

When we return from Spring Break we will begin the training testing- April 16th-20th. The purpose of this training is to have the students become familiar with the assessment tools.  Our testing Window is April 23rd - May 18

Walk For Water

Everyday, women and girls must walk hours to collect clean water.  When communities have access to clean water, girls can attend school, parents can run sustainable farms, and families can break the cycle of poverty.  From April 16-27, we will raise funds for We Walk for Water.  Our student ambassadors will be in front of the school, accepting donations.  We are requesting at least a $10 donation to participate in our Water Walk at lunch on Friday, April 27.  Students will carry containers of water around the field, gaining a small understanding of the journey the women and girls make on a daily basis.  We will be joining groups from all around North America in this journey.  Here is an inspiring video to share with your family.  https://www.trackyourimpact.com/blog/2017/03/24/watch-nepapa-walk-new-path-clean-water-kenya/

Cornerstone Corner

In this month’s ABC book: “Sebastian’s Roller Skates” by Joan de Déu Prats, Sebastian gains confidence while practicing a new physical activity: roller-skating! His newly developed confidence empowers him to speak up and participate more fully in other areas of his life as well. This book shows how physical activity, perseverance, and hard work can bring about great leaps of confidence and skill.

To reinforce this lesson at home, ask your child:

  • What dreams do you have for your future?
  • Which mentors or role models who have a strong purpose in life do you admire? Why?
  • If you could do one thing with your life, what would it be? Why?

  • Here are some tips that might help your child find a sense of purpose:
  • Cut down on television, computer, and telephone time to give your child time to develop her or his interests.
  • Model having a sense of purpose. Do the things that matter to you.
  • Compare passion lists. Have family members each write down five things they're passionate about and then talk about them.
  • Model using positive self-talk and turn mud thoughts into clear thoughts.: “I hate spelling. I never will be able to spell.”=mud thought · “Spelling is hard for me, but I can practice and work hard to do better.”= clear thought.

When you “catch” kids modeling positive behaviors...Notice, Name it, and Celebrate it!
