Hello Springer Families,
What a wonderful week it has been at Springer! It is exciting to see our students really beginning to dive into their learning and settle into the rhythms of a new school year. I have especially enjoyed seeing our new Bridges Math program in action. Students are already engaging in rich conversations about numbers, shapes, estimation, and measurement—and I am so excited to see where this learning takes them. There is something pretty special about listening to children explain their thinking, challenge one another’s ideas, and discover that there can be more than one way to solve a problem!
We also had an amazing Rally Day! Our educational foundation, LAEF (Los Altos Educational Foundation), and our PTA (Parent Teacher Association) showed us what true Springer spirit looks like on Wednesday as they greeted students and families and reminded us of the many incredible experiences made possible through their support. From professional PE teachers and computer science instruction to Living Classroom and art docents, these programs enrich the educational experience for our students in so many meaningful ways.

And, of course, no one brings our community together quite like our PTA! If you have not yet joined, I encourage you to become a member and find a way to get involved. I also encourage our families to consider making a donation to LAEF. Your support truly helps keep these important opportunities available to our students and keeps our schools strong.
Finally, a reminder that Back to School Night is next Thursday! Please mark your calendars. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, learn more about the year ahead, connect with PTA leadership, and get to know other members of our Springer community.
It has been a terrific start to the year, and I am grateful every day to be part of such a vibrant, engaged, and supportive community.

Fourth grader Anahita in Ms. Reede’s class was recognized by fellow fourth grader Sareen for our peer BEES award honor. Sareen stated, "She stayed with me because I was hurt and could not play the game.”

Honey spent the week with Ms. Giforos’s class. She was really happy to hear what a great job they did last week keeping their lunch tables clean and picked up. This week Honey learned so much about the students during Writer’s Workshop, and character strong when they wrote about respect and collaborated on what it looks, feels, and sounds like. Honey is so proud of first grade, they are off to a great start! |
Henry spent his week on the opposite end of campus with Ms. Schumer’s class in sixth grade. These students were also deep in learning during Readers and Writers Workshop, studying character traits and their importance in reading and writing. The collaboration and focus on academic language was pretty impressive to Henry, he thought there were only 2 character traits:being a Stinger or not a Stinger. |

Do you like to connect kids with nature? Living Classroom is seeking volunteers to teach our fun nature-based lessons and help care for our school gardens. No experience necessary as we teach you everything you need to know. Please join us from 9:30am-12:30pm on Mondays 8/31-10/19* at the LASD iLearn Studio to train to become a volunteer docent (*no training on 9/7 - Labor Day). If Mondays don't work for you, please ask about our apprentice-style training option.

The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.
New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. starting September 3rd and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.

Our schools thrive because families and community members give their time in classrooms, libraries, on field trips, and beyond, and we want to keep it that way. Beginning this school year, LASD is bringing all volunteer screening into one consistent, districtwide process to stay compliant with new state laws while preserving the welcoming volunteer culture we love.
New requirements now include TB screening for all volunteers, fingerprint clearance, and mandated reporter training for volunteers who may work with students without direct staff supervision. To make participation easy at every comfort level, volunteer roles are organized into three tiers:

Level 1 – Always supervised by staff (classroom helpers, field trip chaperones, library/office and lunch helpers): complete a volunteer application and a TB risk assessment form.

Level 2 – May work independently with students (tutors/mentors, docents, lunch club leaders, overnight chaperones): all Level 1 steps, plus LiveScan fingerprint clearance and mandated reporter training.

Level 3 – Transports students (field trip and sports/activity drivers): all Level 2 steps, plus a valid CA driver's license and proof of insurance.
We've built a new volunteer webpage with all the forms and step-by-step guidance to make the process as smooth as possible, and we're working to bring LiveScan fingerprinting directly to school sites.
A big thank-you to the volunteers who have already started the process, we appreciate you jumping in early! As a reminder, parents and community volunteers have until December 30, 2026, to complete their authorization.
Because there's a grace period, you can keep volunteering while you complete your steps.
