Principal's Message - August 21, 2026

Hello Springer Families,

As I shared with our community earlier this week, we experienced an unfortunate moment during our Monday morning assembly. I want to begin by again expressing my sincere apology to the entire Springer Community.

While the incident itself was disappointing, I have been incredibly grateful for what followed. I appreciated the direct, honest, and thoughtful communication I received from members of our community. Your willingness to reach out, share your feelings, ask questions, and offer suggestions helped us navigate a difficult moment together. There were important lessons for all of us along the way, and I am grateful for the opportunity to listen and learn alongside our community.

We want to allow our students to share their feelings, fun moments, and curiosities with their community; our “open mic” time at the assembly has been a wonderful way to do this. We are committed to continuing the tradition of creating meaningful opportunities for students to share, while providing thoughtful, age-appropriate guardrails that encourage students to express their thoughts and experiences while respecting the privacy and emotional safety of others. I recognize that I could have been more intentional about those guardrails and will be moving forward.

A special thank you to all the members of our community who reached out and shared your perspectives and ideas via email, phone calls and the listening tour. Your partnership and direct communication was invaluable in helping to shape our thinking about how we move forward. I also want to thank our PTA for their partnership in finding ways we can collaborate to deepen our learning around cultural sensitivity all year.

I want to take this time to remind parents that WhatsApp groups are a fabulous way to connect with one another, but not the most effective way to create change. This is why I am so appreciative of all the direct communication that I received, and the partnerships that it created. As a reminder, please do not share student information or names in WhatsApp.

As many of you heard, we had a wonderful assembly this week focused on appropriate BEES behavior and the stories we all carry with us. We talked about how accents, clothing, food, traditions, and other parts of who we are can tell a story about our experiences and our families. These differences should be sources of interest and curiosity. They should not be fodder for judgment, teasing, or imitation.

One of the most uplifting moments came at the end of the assembly, when students began organically introducing themselves to one another and sharing a little about “their story” and where they are from. It was a beautiful example of what can happen when we create space for curiosity, connection, and understanding. One student even came home and shared his reflection, “Sometimes you don’t realize that someone’s feelings are getting hurt and if they are, they should speak up and say it.”
This is language and thinking we will continue using throughout the year as an educational community. We hope students will feel encouraged to share different parts of their stories in their classrooms, with their friends, and at future assemblies. Every person has a story worth knowing, and our differences give us opportunities to learn from one another.

I want to close by saying again how proud I am of the way our community responded. One thing I believe we modeled beautifully for our students is that when we find ourselves facing adversity, how we respond is what matters. We listen. We reflect. We learn. We make things better. And we move forward together.
The Springer community should be commended for its unity, openness, and collaboration. I have said it before, and I will say it again: Springer is a very special place, indeed.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, or simply want to chat. My door is always open.

Sincerely,
Sarah March

BEES AWARD WINNER BANNER

Liri (5) in Mr. Ramirez class

Fifth grader Liri was recognized by fellow fifth grader Noah L. for our peer BEES award honor. Noah stated, "She helped me calm down when I was angry.”

Thank you, Liri, for being so empathetic and educated in the choices you make to support our Springer Community. You are an amazing Stinger and a great role model to your peers.

Pollock - SECOND Grade - Honey 🍯

Honey spent her first week in Mrs. Pollock’s class. Honey was so excited to see them kick off their new math curriculum called Bridges.

The students here are sharing their number corner, which gives them a morning warm up of finding patterns and thinking about numbers and "mathematical language” in new ways. What a great year it is going to be!

🐝 Henry - THIRD Grade - Williams

Third grade class photo
Henry was in Ms. Williams' class this week. What an amazingly engaging week it was in there. The students investigated everyday items, studied them, asked questions and thought outside the box to turn them into something new!

I don’t know about you, but that sure sounds like some engineers in the making to me! Again, this is going to be a great year!

6th Annual PTA Multicultural Fair

Attend & Share Your Culture!
Fri, Sep 18 5:30-7pm @ Springer

Our school community is made stronger by the many cultures, traditions, languages, and experiences our families bring with them. PTA’s consistent goal is to partner with the school staff and district to create a welcoming community where everyone feels proud to share what is meaningful to them and encouraged to explore, listen, and learn. The PTA Multicultural Fair on September 18 is an opportunity to celebrate that diversity and give our children a chance to learn about the world through the people they already know.

At this event, we ask families to sign up to share their culture through food, music, clothing, games, toys, traditions, language, etc - however is appropriate with inclusivity as the goal. We hope this collaborative effort will help students experience cultures in a personal and meaningful way. Just as importantly, this event gives children the opportunity to ask questions, discover similarities, appreciate differences, and develop curiosity and respect for one another.

Springer PTA is working closely with our school staff to make the Multicultural Fair not only a celebration, but also an environment for learning. Events like this help our children understand an important lesson: our differences are something to be curious about and celebrate, and learning about one another helps build a stronger, more connected community.

Please mark your calendar to attend and consider volunteering to share your culture and help us achieve our goal. SIGN UP & LEARN MORE

Updates from your Springer LAEF Board Representatives:
Martina Whalen
Reem Alsweilem
Katherine Olsson Carter

Let’s come together and support a high-quality, well-rounded education at Springer this school year.

For 44 years, LAEF has funded the teachers, staff, and programs that make our students’ education exceptional beyond what public funding covers.

Beginning in 2026–27, LAEF is expanding its role by fundraising for instructional programs and materials that were previously supported by the PTAs. This change allows us to provide more consistent support for these programs across every LASD school. This is a shift in fundraising responsibility, not educational priorities, creating clearer roles and simpler giving for families. So we are asking you to shift some of their donations toward LAEF, in a similar way to how the fundraising responsibilities are shifting.

Let's set our students up for a successful year. Learn more about what your gift makes possible.

Here’s how to partner with us:

Complete the LASD Back to School process at LASDEducationPartners.org
Step 1: Donate to LAEF
Step 2: Join and donate to the PTA for each school your children attend

Thank you for supporting our neighborhood schools!

Become an Art Docent!

The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.

New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. starting September 3rd and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.

Join us! It’s a wonderful way to learn something new, share your creativity, and make a lasting impact on our students!
